Reading Lists

For whatever reason I’ve been keeping track of the books that I’ve read over the years. I think it’s mostly all of the books that I’ve read, but some years I count the technical books and others I don’t. I tend not to track magazines anymore though I might have done so at some point. My general impression of why I started was because a woman that I worked with told me she did it and it sounded like a good idea. It became beneficial when I started reading a lot of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe mysteries and couldn’t remember which one’s I had read.

For a few years I was working towards reading 52 books in a year. However, I normally get busy working or something else and never quite make it. My closest year thus far had me at 47 books or something along those lines. That particular year I was reading a lot of magazines too so I probably could have nailed the 52 books if I had stayed focused on books.

The year after that I realized I didn’t really care if I read 52 books in a year and that I wanted to simply read and not make a challenge out of it. So I started reading more non-fiction than I had before and started digging into more difficult materials. Lately my reading has taken me into some philosophy, soviet history, and a bunch of other odd things that give the brain something to chew on while you’re riding your bicycle around Lake Tahoe or working your way through a 6-pack of Newcastles.
